Between The Lines – Surfers During the Vietnam War
Between the Lines is a film which takes a look at the choice faced by draft age surfers during the Vietnam War: go to war or evade the draft. The film considers the lives of two surfers who take the different paths, Pat Farley and Brant Page.
Pat Farley volunteered to fight in Vietnam and was discharged with a full psychiatric pension. On the other hand we have Brant Page who escaped the draft and ran off to surf the Hawaiian Islands where he was chased and eventually caught by the FBI.
Following the lives of the surfers, the documentary tells the story of the impact that Vietnam had on the lifestyle of surfers in general. From soldiers who surfed in enemy territory, to the anti-war movement back home and the aftermath of the war. Between the Lines examines the cultures response to the extraordinary circumstances of the time.
